For the next few months I will be assisting with the set up and education in the Butterfly Habitat at Stan Hwyet Hall & Gardens in Akron Ohio. The Butterfly Habitat is a seasonal exhibit that runs from late June until cooler weather arrives, around September. The exhibit used to host tropical butterflies, but shifted to a native approach a number of years ago. This decision allowed the conversations brought up in the exhibit to become about the importance of native plants and animals to an ecosystem. It also makes the knowledge gained by visitors more applicable to their daily lives. Instead of just seeing a beautiful tropical butterfly, visitors can now learn about how to encourage butterfly visitors in their own back yards.
This blog will follow my participation in this event. Expect to see photographs of our progress, updates on my responsibilities, and fun facts about butterflies and plants in Northeast Ohio!
